Pros: the mail system is decent and the postal workers are genuinely reliable. Additionally, the police force really isn’t bad. Local lifelong residents often complain about them, but having lived in major cities like Chicago, New York, and New Orleans, I can say the police here are quite reasonable by comparison.
Social Services: The staff at local social services do the absolute best they can with what they have, but they are severely limited by budget cuts.
Cons: Social & Political Climate: Macomb has a distinct social climate that can feel incredibly unwelcoming if you don’t conform to the majority. There is a strong undercurrent of intolerance; anyone who doesn’t align with dominant conservative/MAGA views is frequently met with hostility or judgment. Customer service across town mirrors this lack of warmth, and the cost of living feels disproportionately high for a small town with so few amenities.
Home Services: Finding trustworthy contractors is a nightmare. Most handymen and housing repair services I’ve encountered have been highly unprofessional or shady.
Senior Services & Housing: The housing market is overpriced. Worse, the local senior/disabled housing options are poorly maintained and lack cleanliness. Due to a shrinking local tax base and limited state resources for the Western Illinois Area Agency on Aging, there are chronic funding gaps. This directly hurts focal points like the YMCA of McDonough County Senior Center. As a result, home-delivered meals face waitlists, caregiver respite capacity is stretched to the limit, and community outreach is severely understaffed.
Healthcare & Transit: McDonough District Hospital (MDH) is clean, but the local doctors are incredibly iffy. I have not found medical professionals here who are truly knowledgeable, forcing me to travel to Peoria, Chicago, or larger regions for competent care. Public and private transportation is practically nonexistent; there are no taxi services, Uber is rarely available, and public transit funding pressures limit low-cost rides for seniors.
