How safe residents feel walking around, raising kids, and going about daily life.
Perceived safety rather than crime statistics: whether people walk at night, whether packages stay on the porch, whether they'd let a teenager take the bus alone. This is deliberately subjective — it captures the lived experience that a city-wide crime rate averages away.
Crime statistics are city-wide and often years old, while safety is experienced block by block. A city with a middling crime rate can feel entirely safe in the neighbourhoods people actually live in, and the reverse is also true — which is why resident perception is worth reading alongside the official numbers, not instead of them.
Every score comes from residents rating the place they live, not from an index we calculated. People score safety from 0 to 10 alongside nine other life aspects, and write about what works and what doesn't. Each review is read by a person before it appears.
Cities are ranked on the mean of their safety scores. Any city with at least one approved review is eligible, which means a highly-rated city with two reviews can currently outrank a well-known one with five — worth keeping in mind when reading the table above.
